Bad Horsie is a bold exploration of strength, instinct, and transformation. Blending abstraction with figurative elements, the horse emerges through fractured planes of colour, expressive line work, and layered textures, inviting the viewer to assemble the image through imagination rather than certainty. Rich purples, deep blacks, warm ochres, and soft greys create a striking visual rhythm, balancing power with elegance. The fragmented composition suggests movement and emotion, reflecting the untamed spirit that has made the horse a timeless symbol of freedom, resilience, and independence. Rather than depicting the animal realistically, Bad Horsie captures its essence—its energy, presence, and raw character. For a period of my career, I worked extensively in the events industry, producing shows for the equestrian and show jumping community. Spending time around these remarkable athletes—both human and equine—gave me a deep appreciation for the partnership, trust, and discipline required to compete at such a high level. Bad Horsie was inspired by that experience. Rather than painting a traditional portrait of a horse, I wanted to capture the energy, movement, and powerful presence that define the sport. The fragmented forms and bold colours reflect the intensity of competition, where speed, precision, and instinct come together in a matter of seconds. The title adds a touch of playfulness, but the painting is ultimately a tribute to the beauty, athleticism, and spirit of these magnificent animals. It celebrates not only the horse itself, but also the unique world of show jumping and the extraordinary bond between horse and rider.
