Blue Madiba
Acrylic on canvas · 100 × 150 cm · 2025
Blue Madiba is a bold, fragmented portrait of Nelson Mandela, constructed through expressive blocks of blue, black and deep green. Rather than presenting Mandela as a conventional portrait, the work breaks his image apart and rebuilds it through colour, shape and movement. The blue dominates the composition, giving the piece a sense of calm, dignity and contemplation, while the dark forms suggest strength, history and the weight of a remarkable life. As my largest work to date, the scale allows Mandela’s presence to become almost architectural—less a portrait of a man and more an impression of the figure he became in the consciousness of South Africa and the world.
This is a particularly personal tribute to Nelson Mandela. I had the extraordinary privilege of sitting down with Madiba over tea when we launched his Centre for Reconciliation. There were no crowds, no stage and no audience—just the two of us sharing a quiet moment. That experience stayed with me. Blue Madiba is my artistic response to that memory: not an attempt to reproduce the man I saw, but to capture something of the presence, humanity and quiet power I experienced sitting across from him. This painting is not simply a portrait of Mandela. It is my memory of Madiba.
