Eyes wide shut
Acrylic on canvas · 42 × 59 cm · 2024
Eyes Wide Shut is a stark monochromatic study of power, vulnerability and surrender. The restricted palette of black, white and grey removes distraction, allowing the figure, posture and dramatic blocks of shadow to carry the emotion. The seated figure appears caught between control and release. The strong architectural shapes surrounding her create a sense of confinement, while the contrast between light and darkness suggests the tension between what is consciously seen and what is deliberately left unseen. Rather than portraying kink as something purely physical, the work explores its psychological language: trust, control, vulnerability and the choice to surrender.
This is another work from my exploration of kink as a subject in fine art. With Eyes Wide Shut, I wanted to move away from simply depicting the physical aspects of kink and explore the mindset behind it. The title became central to the idea: sometimes we close our eyes not because we cannot see, but because we choose to experience something without trying to control every moment of it. The limited palette was deliberate. I wanted the painting to feel almost like a memory or a scene glimpsed through half-closed eyes—ambiguous, intimate and slightly mysterious. Kink has a long history of appearing in visual art, with contemporary interpretations increasingly exploring themes of identity, power and consent rather than simply provocation.
