Mona L Revised
acrylic and oil pastels on wood · 42 × 59 cm · 2023
Mona L Revised is a bold contemporary reinterpretation of an iconic masterpiece, reimagined through the language of abstraction and colour. Created with acrylic and oil pastels on wood, the composition fragments the familiar portrait into expressive geometric forms, inviting the viewer to see beyond recognition and explore emotion, identity, and perspective. Vibrant colours and layered textures breathe new life into a timeless image, balancing echoes of the original with a distinctly modern voice. Rather than recreating history, the work celebrates transformation—demonstrating how even the most familiar subjects can be seen anew through imagination and artistic freedom.
Standing before the Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris was a memorable moment in my artistic journey. While seeing such an iconic painting was inspiring, I found myself equally captivated by the incredible collection of masterpieces throughout the museum. Walking through its galleries reminded me that great art is not only about technical skill, but about the courage to see the world differently. Mona L Revised is not an attempt to copy Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, but a personal response to the inspiration I found at the Louvre. Using acrylic and oil pastels on wood, I deconstructed the familiar image into bold shapes and vibrant colours, allowing my own artistic voice to emerge. It is a tribute to the artists who came before us while celebrating the freedom every artist has to reinterpret, reimagine, and create something uniquely their own.
